1. – Da e per tutti gli Uffici Telegrafici dell’Amministrazione, oltre ai telegrammi

Henze wrote this telegram to the two librettists about problems in choosing the lead role for the premiere of the opera Elegy for Young Lovers in its original language, at Glyndebourne, produced by Rennert.

"… impazzito vuole scritturare Winters negro"Henze had reservations about casting a coloured person in the role of Mittenhofer. Until the late 1960s, the word “nigger” was not used in a derogatory sense in language and literature. Today, the word "negro" is considered disrespectful in Italian.

"… incapace pregovi intervenire telegraficamente Glyndebourne"Henze refers to the singer of the lead role for the first performance of Elegy for Young Lovers in its original language at Glyndebourne, produced by Rennert. The baritone Carlos Alexander was subsequently cast as Mittenhofer.
