HenDi-WebApp Version 4.0.0
With version 4.0.0, we publish the correspondence of Hans Werner Henze with Grete Weil and Walter Jockisch. With this, we significantly expand the temporal framework of our edition, as this correspondence covers the years 1948 to 1997 and has a particular focus on the early period up to 1953. Grete Weil and Walter Jockisch are known as collaborators on Henze’s first full-length opera “Boulevard Solitude”, which premiered in Hanover on February 17, 1952. However, as interesting as the information about this collaboration is, the insights the letters provide into Henze’s personal and artistic development are equally noteworthy. Unfortunately, this correspondence is very one-sided: the majority of the letters are from the hand of Hans Werner Henze, and due to the lack of replies, some aspects are difficult to interpret. The first letters from Grete Weil were only received sporadically after the death of Walter Jockisch in 1970.
We are pleased to be able to present another facet of Hans Werner Henze’s personality with this extensive correspondence. For the first time, we have also published two documents that are not part of the correspondence but are an important addition. These are the texts by Grete Weil “Über meine Zusammenarbeit mit Hans Werner Henze ” and “Über meine Zusammenarbeit mit Hans Werner Henze ”, both written for program booklets for performances of “Boulevard Solitude” and therefore not easily accessible.
As we released a Maintenance Release (v3.1.0) in mid-March, version v4.0.0 contains only a few technical innovations.
The new features in the HenDi WebApp include:
- The breadcrumbs now also reflect collective authorship.
- The envelopes of the letters are available in full view. Access is provided through the respective letter.
- In the edition guidelines, chapter references and element lists are now displayed.
- The view of telegrams has been expanded but is still in development.
- Minor display errors have been fixed.
- The context menu of the letters is not designed to handle collectives. The current extension is still in an early stage, so inaccuracies may occur.
- In Firefox browsers, icons may not load correctly. This issue is temporary and caused by the font used.
- Music examples are not currently displayed.
