    Commentary

    • "… May 8th 1966"The date is inferred from the fact that Auden refers to a ballet by Henze that was to be performed in Austria. In all likelihood, the librettist is referring to the premiere of the ballet Tancredi, which took place on 18 May 1966 at the Vienna State Opera, with choreography by Rudolf Nureyev, to whom the work is dedicated.
    • "… They have found the rooms."Auden thanked Henze for his help, requested in his letter on 10 October [1965], in finding rooms to stay in Salzburg for the subsequent premiere of The Bassarids that was to be held there on 6 August 1966.
