Commentary
-
"… am here in Europe again."The correspondence shows that Barnet was already in Europe a few years earlier, at least from May to July 1978. He mentions this trip to Russia and Estland in his letter on 3 January 1979. From 1978, Barnet was able to obtain permission from the Cuban government to travel, after seven years of not being able to travel or even publish, due to his support for Padilla in the “Padilla Affair”, in 1971.
-
"… 12 years after we met."Henze and Barnet had first met in Cuba in March 1969.
-
"… Book Fair in Surkhamp Verlag"Suhrkamp published Barnet’s El Cimarrón and La Canción de Rachel in German translation. In particular, in 1981, Suhrkamp published Barnet’s book Alle träumten von Cuba, the German translation of Gallego. Barnet sent a copy of this book to Henze (now kept in Henze’s library in Detmold) and wrote “To my brother in years and emotions, Hans Werner with a love that will grow everyday and more. Yours, M Barnet”.
