In the study score of The Bassarids is written: „Einrichtung von Helmut Reinold. Deutsche Übersetzung von Maria Bosse-Sporleder“. Reinold was initially supposed to translate the libretto of the opera from English to German. However, Henze’s correspondences with Auden, Kallman, Reinold and Bosse-Sporleder, kept at the Paul Sacher Foundation, show that the two librettists were not satisfied with his work and that eventually the translation was done by Bosse-Sporleder.
